Formed in 1838, the Fourth Universalist Society was organized under the name "Friends of the Final Restitution." Under the leadership of Rev. Edwin Hubbell Chapin from 1848-1880, the group took the title "Church of the Divine Paternity," and in 1967 the name changed to the Fourth Universalist Society in the City of New York.
